We continue this week with excerpts from The Journals of Jim Elliot in the Summer of 1948 as we witness his deep longing and desire for Christ. Next week we conclude our series.
AUGUST 25 2 Kings 3:16, 17 Water from an unseen source—how often is the soul strengthened for battle, succored by no observable circumstance, when we are willing to dig in valley places? But miraculously satisfying thirst is “a light thing” with my God. He wants to make overcomers, victors of those famished hearts. The water came by way of Edom—desert land. How often does God do thus—streams in the desert.
Evening. Father is merciful today. Wept twice in prayer but can’t tell why. Thou knowest my motives for asking tears, Lord. Not for tears’ sake but for Thy sake, following Your example (Heb. 5:7), and for the promise of Psalms 126:6. God, give me a tender heart. Couple of thoughts that came home real were: Christ the carpenter of Nazareth (Mark 6:3) became the carpenter of Calvary (Col. 2:14). Thank God, He cried, “Why hast Thou forsaken me?” that I should cry, “Why hast Thou accepted me?”
